Fly Fishing the Waters of Polynesia and the Caribbean

Thursday, November 4th, 5 to 7 P.M. at the Roosevelt Restaurant in Ketchum

Free Admission

Herb Myer from Trout Unlimited’s Boise Chapter will offer a two-part slide show, first of fly fishing for bone fish in French Polynesia at Tetiaroa, Marlon Brando`s private atoll, and Anaa, a remote atoll in the Tuamotu Island chain.
Tahiti offers an epic adventure into the remote Tuamotu Archipelago of French Polynesia in search of monster bonefish.

Polynesia's Tuamotu Archipelago is a true tropical paradise characterized by uninhabited islands, white sand flats, and large unsophisticated bonefish that have rarely, if ever, seen a fly.  These heavy-shouldered fish range from 4 to 12 pounds and chase flies with reckless abandon.

For the true saltwater explorer, this experience offers excellent and exciting reef fishing for a wide range of exotic species as well as solitude and incredible natural beauty.

The second part of Herb’s presentation will be Bone and Tarpon fishing... (more)

Wild Trout Biology and Management

Thursday, October 7th, 5 to 7 P.M. at the Roosevelt Restaurant in Ketchum

Free Admission

Jeff Dillon, Idaho Fish &Game’s Southwest Region Fishery Manager, will summarize the important pieces of wild trout population dynamics, the things biologists measure when they sample, and how the Idaho Department of Fish & Game uses this information to judge the health of a fishery and weigh options for fishing regulations. Jeff will include many examples for wild rainbow and cutthroat trout around Idaho.  There will be a lot of information, but Jeff wants to keep it as informal and interactive as possible.  We’re sure the group will come up with some really good questions along the way.

Jeff Dillon has nearly 22 years with IDFG.  He spent over eight years as a research biologist in Jerome working on statewide projects on forage fish, largemouth and smallmouth bass, hatchery trout stocking strategies, and development of sterile (triploid) hatchery trout.  He transferred to... Teton Dam — A Wild Legacy at Risk

and

Transfer of Local Water Rights — A Controversy

Thursday, September 2, 5 to 7 P.M. at the Roosevelt Restaurant in Ketchum

Free Admission

Teton Dam

Almost 32 years ago, the Teton Dam in southeastern Idaho failed against the force of a 17-mile long, 270-foot deep reservoir. Eight months of stored stream flow and snowmelt crashed down the valley in less than six hours, swallowing the communities of Rexburg, Teton, Newdale and Sugar City. Eleven people died and the wall of water caused as much as $1 billion in damage, according to local reports.

Now, the dam may be resurrected.

Kim Goodman, the director of the Idaho Water Project, will update our audience on the study that Trout Unlimited launched a couple of months ago regarding this issue, and will show a film that was produced last year to illustrate both the history of this tragedy and Trout Unlimited's perspective on the proposal to rebuild this dam.

Before coming to TU,... (more)

With lower flow of our local runoff this spring, anglers will have a good chance to take advantage of prolific June hatches. Our chapter’s May speaker, Brian Richter, will provide his expert advice on how to match the spring hatches and land our hungry and eager Trout.

The meeting will be from 5:00PM to 7:00 on Thursday, May 6th at the Roosevelt Restaurant in Ketchum. Admission is free.

Silver Creek Outfitters fishing guide Brian Richter is a native Idahoan. He grew up fishing our area waters with his father, both learning the art of flyfishing together. He started fishing in the Wood River Valley at the age of 12 and began tying custom flies for people at the age of 17. Brian has always been dedicated to the sport of flies and fish. In college, he further improved his fly fishing talents by starting a college minor in aquatic entomology, just so he could better understand what trout like to eat! Brian is an avid angler in both the fresh and saltwater arenas and a world class fly tier in both as... (more)

In an exciting new move into new guiding waters, Silver Creek Outfitters recently acquired Stanley based Sawtooth Fishing Guides from Julie Meissner. The purchase expands Silver Creek Outfitter's area of operation to include the Main Salmon River from Stanley to Challis, Headwaters of the Middle Fork, and a variety of alpine lakes. In addition Silver Creek Outfitters now has the opportunity to offer guided drift boat fishing trips on the Main Salmon River.

Silver Creek Outfitters' roots may be traced back over 40 years beginning as Dick Alf's Fly Shop in 1963 and evolving into a world class fly fishing specialty store.

A 30-plus year veteran of the Sawtooth Valley, Julie Meissner created a successful trout and steelhead outfitting business based on her many years of experience guiding guests into Idaho's backcountry. She is looking forward to continuing as a guide for Silver Creek Outfitters. "I am looking forward to doing what I love most, being on the river" she says, "but I won't miss the office work." Most... By Ed Mitchell, Fish & Game Idaho

At the end of the day Wednesday, March 31, Idaho's first regulated wolf season closes statewide.

The season already has closed in seven of 12 wolf zones, and as of March 31, hunters have taken 185 wolves. The harvest limit is 220.

"The season has succeeded in halting the growth of Idaho's wolf population," Fish and Game Director Cal Groen said. "It showed that Fish and Game is capable of monitoring and managing a well-regulated wolf hunt."

The hunt also showed that fears of wholesale slaughter of wolves were unfounded, Groen said. Hunters exhibited good compliance with the rules and with check-in and call-in requirements.

Idaho Fish and Game set wolf harvest limits for each of 12 management zones. The season closes in each zone when the limit for that zone is reached, or when the statewide limit of 220 wolves is reached.

Idaho Fish and Game sold 31,393 wolf tags for this season - 30,612 resident and 684 nonresident tags.

Harvested wolves ranged in size from 54 to 127 pounds - males averaged 100 pounds, and females... (more)
