Papoose Club will hold its annual Quigley Cup cross-country ski event on Sunday, February 26. This fun, free event features races in both skate and classic disciplines for kids ages 3-13, as well as an obstacle course. Quigley Cup will be held at Quigley Nordic Center, located at the end of Fox Acres Roads in Hailey. Registration will be held from 10:00 - 10:30am and the races begin at 11:00. Sturtevants Mountain Outfitters in Hailey is offering a $6 equipment rental to kids who participate in Quigley Cup. Quigley Cup is a free community service event put on by Papoose Club, in partnership with staff from the Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation’s Nordic ski program and the Blaine County Recreation District.The event was introduced in 2007 as a cross-country skiing complement to Papoose Club’s long-standing downhill races for kids—the Kindercup. “Quigley Cup is a fun, low-key event that brings out a lot of local families,” says Tizz Miller, this year’s Quigley Cup chair. “Our members love planning this event, and...Celebrate the Nordic Festival with a free outdoor concert with Tim Snider and Sound Society on Thursday, February 2. The concert will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 pm at the Sun Valley Center for the Arts lot across from the Ketchum post office. The band will start at 5:30 and the finals of the Elite Competition will begin at 5:45. Quickly becoming the can't be missed event of the nine-day Sun Valley Nordic Festival, the Ketchum Downtown Jam and NordicTown USA Sprint features sprint races with top Nordic skiers, food and drinks and a bonfire to keep spectators warm. Now is the time to take your Nordic skiing to the next level with ski lessons at the BCRD Quigley Nordic Winter Park conveniently located just minutes from downtown Hailey. The BCRD Nordic ski school offers a variety of programs, clinics and lessons for all levels and types of skiers. Join the BCRD instructors in a women’s only skate group that will focus on basic techniques, hill skills and gliding gears in a three-week program starting January 30th. Kick off the start of the weeklong Sun Valley Nordic Festival on the BCRD Wood River Trail at “Ski the Rails” Saturday, January 28. Blaine County Recreation District and the Hailey Chamber of Commerce invite you, your friends & family and even your dog to join in a free cross-country ski tour along the former Union Pacific Railroad. Ski from Ketchum to Hailey at this popular community event and add the kilometers to your tally for the 200 km Trails Challenge, a challenge to ski 200 km of the valley’s Nordic trails. The BCRD Wood River Trail is groomed for both classic and skate skiing. Funded by tax dollars, no trail pass is required to ski on the BCRD Wood River Trail. The trail is a multi-use trail, open to walkers, snowshoers, skiers and dogs. The west may be having a warm and dry winter, but the cross-country skiing in Sun Valley is superb after welcomed snowfall during the holidays. With more than 150 kilometers groomed and in great shape in NordicTown USA, the groomers of the Blaine County Recreation District and Sun Valley Resort have been working hard to set up great tracks for classic skiing, skating, and snowshoeing from Ketchum, Idaho to Galena Lodge in the Sawtooth National Recreation Area just north of Sun Valley. Conditions on the Harriman Trail (Boulder Mountain Tour course) are incredibly good and even if there is no additional snow for the first week of February, there is plenty of high quality snow for the Sun Valley Nordic Festival to go forward without disruption. Nordic skiers, don’t get caught without wax on your skis, winter is here and it’s time to think skiing! Blaine County Recreation District (BCRD) and TOKO invite you to learn how to wax your own Nordic skis at a free clinics offered Thursday, Dec. 15 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. in the Art Room of the Community Campus in Hailey. Bring your skis (and any additional waxing equipment if you have it) for this “hands on” clinic. Join TOKO wax expert EJ Harpham to learn the basic waxing techniques. The clinic will provide an opportunity to learn basic ski base prep and hot-waxing. Remember, great ski bases equal fast skis and that’s makes skiing more fun! And even if your goal is not speed or race orientated, having well-maintained ski bases can help your skis glide more easily and extend the life of your skis. BCRD FitWorks will host the 3rd annual SkiErg World Sprints November 11–13. Participants will race 1000 meters on the SkiErg at their convenience during operating hours of FitWorks on Friday, Saturday or Sunday. FitWorks membership is not required to participate and there is no charge for this event. To compare times worldwide, skiers must post their time to the Concept2 Logbook by 5 p.m. Monday, November 14, 2011.
