The SVO Pet of the Week is Amber. Amber is a rare beauty indeed! What makes her even more unique is that most orange cats are male, but Amber is female… not something we see every day. Amber is a bit shy, but she really enjoys attention and is to be fine with other cats. She would do best in a home where there wasn’t too much activity and she had time to adjust to all that was happening around her. A real stunner, we believe Miss Amber will make a wonderful companion. Amber is a spayed female Domestic Shorthair born around January 2008. For more information about Amber or any of the other wonderful pets awaiting adoption at the animal shelter, please visit our website at www.animalshelterwrv.org or call 788-6444.
The Sun Valley Figure Skating Club hosted its 2012 Winter Games Competition on February 11. The one-day event drew skaters from Jackson Hole and Boise, as well as most local competitive skaters.
Alexandra Harten, Joyce Chan, Caitlin Sholtis and Isabella Bourret competed at the qualifying levels, Juvenile through Senior. Skating at the Novice Ladies level, Harten won gold medals in both the Novice Short Program and in Novice/Intermediate Artistic, and a silver medal in Free Skate. Joyce Chan and Caitlin Sholtis competed against Harten in Novice/Intermediate Artistic, with Chan winning Silver and Sholtis Bronze. Isabella Bourret competed at the Juvenile level, winning three silver medals in Free Skate, Artistic and Juvenile/...
"Snowboarders talk about progression, but evolution is a better way to describe the influential two-decade career of Wyatt Caldwell. From defining film footage, stunning images and street rail mastery to a resume stacked with a Grand Prix Halfpipe Championship, a Transworld Magazine cover and Vans Cup wins in multiple disciplines—Wyatt has made his mark on the international contest circuit and the national professional stage. But as Wyatt's style has evolved, his focus has shifted from X Games and Dew Tour Slopestyle stops to the untracked terrain park of the backcountry. In this venue he has applied his free-reign style to long powder spines, huge pillow stacks and AK cliff lines with a clean, technical result. Now part of the YES movement, Wyatt has migrated from the Mammoth and Salt Lake scenes back home to Sun Valley and the surrounding ranges where he first learned to ride." (Hailey, ID) – Tele, snowboard and alpine disciplines were all represented on the race course at last Friday’s Dual Race at Rotarun Ski Area, sponsored by Hearing Aid Counselors & Audiology. Friday’s race was the third in the 4-race series presented by 5-B Garage and Rotarun Ski Area. Racers’ last chance to join the fun is this Friday at the Haemmerle & Haemmerle Dual GS Race. Competition is open to all ages and any equipment. Everyone is welcome to practice running gates Wednesday, 6:30 p.m. at Rotarun. Race registration will be at Sun Valley Brewing on Thursday, 7 – 8 p.m.; or just before racing Friday, 5 – 6 p.m. at Rotarun. Here are the results for racers completing two runs, which were combined for times:

The Animal Shelter of the Wood River Valley is celebrating their 30th anniversary with a special World Spay Day goal to spay or neuter 30 cats in conjunction with their No-Cost Community Spay/Neuter Program on February 28, 2012. Executive Director/Medical Director Jo-Anne Dixon, DVM, and Operations Manager Nadia Novik, CVT, will be hard at work all day in order to accomplish this ambitious goal. World Spay Day is an annual event promoted by The Humane Society, designed to shine a spotlight on spay/neuter as a proven means of saving the lives of companion animals and preventing pet overpopulation. According to The Humane Society, “Nationwide, an estimated 6-8 million homeless kittens, puppies, cats, and dogs enter animal shelters every year. About half of these animals are adopted. Tragically, the other half are put down. The majority of animals euthanized are healthy, sweet pets who would have made great companions.” In Blaine County, we are lucky to have a responsible no-kill shelter for our homeless...
If you’re familiar with bluegrass music, then you’re tuned in to some of what Greensky Bluegrass does. They’re also known to throw a great party, rock n roll, and (if the critics are to be believed) they have great songs. They are unquestionably a team of friends that traverse the country making music they enjoy. What makes Greensky different than Bluegrass? Poignant rural ballads about real people? Dobro tone that Jerry (Douglas or Garcia) would love? Distortion Pedals? Grit and attitude from a whiskey soaked card game? Indeed, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg. This quintet from Michigan has been staying up late at all the coolest festivals and stopping to play your favorite clubs and theaters across America for 11 years now. Nearly 175 shows per year has prepared them for the rigorous task of continuity. Greensky Bluegrass isn’t slowing down. “They’re coming to your town to help you party down.”...
Cherie Burns will discuss her latest book, Searching for Beauty--The Life of Millicent Rogers, the first comprehensive biography of the Standard Oil heiress and fashion icon. Educational Workshops focused on Child Nutrition this February offer tasty, healthy recipe ideas and basic nutritional information to parents. Kids explore better nutrition with...
When most people hear the word 'detox,' they think of someone coming off drugs or alcohol. But in today's over-dependence on synthetic chemicals used in food production, 'cleaning' products, house wares and almost every other industry, there isn't a single person in America living without chemicals in their body, resultantly taking a toll on the health of your body…whether you notice it, yet, or not. You can’t see them but toxins are ubiquitous in today’s world. Be it in the water, the sky, or the land, toxins are there. If unfiltered, drinking water can be full of chlorine or residues from plastic bottles. Many of America’s rivers and lakes are too polluted for swimming or aquatic life. The air can be full of emissions from cars and factory smoke stacks, pesticides, and chemical fertilizers. All of these end up in your lungs, and in the soil where your food grows. Toxins aren't just outside either. The EPA states that American homes are 70 times more polluted than outdoor air due to household cleaners, and vapors...

Just like living organisms, cities thrive and decline. Sometimes they even die. A new multidisciplinary project opening at the Sun Valley Center for the Arts on Friday, February 17 explores the “urban lifecycle” through visual arts exhibitions, a film, an artist talk and a free Family Day activity. “We tend to think of cities in opposition to nature and the environment,” says Courtney Gilbert, The Center’s Curator of Visual Arts. “But when we talk about cities, we often use words that reveal that they are actually complex systems with unique cycles of growth and decline, sometimes expanding and sometimes, literally, shrinking.” Urban Lifecycles opens at The Center, Ketchum, during Gallery Walk on Friday, February 17 from 5 to 8 pm. Enjoy a glass of wine and be among the first to see the exhibition. Gilbert hopes the project will get people thinking about why some cities overcome cycles of decline and decay while others stagnate or wither. Are strong economies&...

Gail Severn Gallery artist Theodore Waddell, will have an artist chat on Saturday, February 18 at 10:00 am at Gail Severn Gallery. Come walk the gallery with Theodore as he discusses and fields questions about his latest work. Idaho and Montana Rancher Theodore Waddell is an internationally recognized artist that has spent more than 50 years painting and sculpting his beloved western landscape full of horses, cattle and sheep - the icons of his life. Waddell’s first exposure to painting was watching his father complete Paint by Numbers paintings. He used small brushes and very small containers of paint. This is the exact opposite of Theodore’s paintings. Waddell uses paint by the gallon, and he modifies brushes and trowels normally used for asphalt roofing. A gallery owner once joked that he should sell his paintings by the pound. Theodore’s love of the medium is evident even in his work on paper. Waddell fills his canvases with endless combinations of colors, washes and sometimes wax. His impasto...
Live Tonight! One of our favorite bands from Colorado the "Fox Street All-Stars" Band Starts at 10PM. From the beginning of their time together, this core trio has been profoundly influenced by the culture and music of the south and, specifically, New Orleans. Since they first got serious about the band a yearly pilgrimage to the New Orleans Jazz Fest to bond over late nights jam sessions and bellies full of beer of crawfish has been practically mandatory. “A lot of serious band decisions have been made on our yearly Jazz Fest visit,” said Low who considers the New Orleans style of drumming to be at the core of his playing due to years studying under the legendary Crescent City drummer Stanton Moore of Galactic and Garage A Trois. For the last two years The Fox Street All Stars have had the honor of not only headlining the official Galactic After Show Party, but also of having Moore sit-in with them for several numbers. The New Orleans vibe is a big part of what...
